PhD in Public Health Informatics
Health information is a cornerstone of the primary health care approach and is considered to be one of the key developmental priorities in the country. Accordingly, trained professional at higher level is essential to solve problems. The PhD program in Public Health Informatics, the very first of its kind in Ethiopia and Africa, was launched in line with the new five-year health sector transformation plan of the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia that aims to have information revolution in the health system. The plan highlighted the lack of highly qualified Health Informatics professionals and scientific evidence as one of the top challenges facing the Ethiopian Health sector in addition to health services financing, health services management, and health service distribution. The goal of the doctoral program is to train candidates to become independent, productive, and creative research scientists in the field of Health Informatics.
MPH in Health Informatics
The WHO has recognized the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as a core competency of the 21st century healthcare workforce to support patient care. Thus, professionals having good knowledge, attitude and practice on the ICTs application in health system are highly demanded in Ethiopia. Master of public Health in Health Informatics in the University of Gondar is the graduate program established with the aim of producing health informatics professionals that can support the public health practices, research, and teaching learning.
BSc In Health Informatics (Regular)
With a widespread use of information technology in healthcare organizations, there is a pressing need for professionals who are both skilled in the use and management of information systems and knowledgeable in the field of healthcare. With due considerations of the gaps of health informatics professionals in the health systems, nationwide effort for implementation of information revolution agenda in the health sector, and by realizing its potential to establish and run this program, the FMoH in collaboration with higher education institutions shown commitments to launch health informatics program in BSc degree. University of Gondar started a new bachelor’s degree in the health informatics program commencing in 2012. The aim of this program is to promote and support the use of health informatics concept in health services delivery, health management systems, research, learning and health policy development with the ultimate purpose of improving health outcomes for the people.
